New sounds and sights for harpsichord
Text in the booklet of the CD

'The Dutch harpsichordist Annelie de Man has specialised in the contemporary repertoire for her instrument. In the course of time she drew what was to her a logical conclusion: she commissioned the artist Sies Bleeker to adapt her instrument so that the visual impact would correspond to the audible. This meant the complete metamorphosis of an instrument whose shape and ornamentation, both in original and copied examples, so clearly reflect the spirit of the Renaissance and Baroque, the periods in which the harpsichord flourished. The intention was not so much that the instrument should radiate the spirit of the late 20th-century, but rather that it should become dissociated from the appearance so clearly defined by the climate of the original period.

On 18th October 1987 Annelie de Man introduced the metamorphosed harpsichord in a 'première' recital in the musical instrument hall of the Haags Gemeentemuseum, a visible and audible manifestation of this 'new' instrument among so many 'historical' instruments of the same type yet of so different nature. Those who were present felt the extraordinary tension caused by the confrontation of the harpsichord, producer of musical sounds. The same tension gave rise to the idea that for this very reason the Music Department of the Haags Gemeentemuseum should issue a CD of new Dutch compositions for the harpsichord, performed by Annelie de Man. The recordings for this CD were also made in the musical instrument hall.'
